BurstekReporter’s system requirements heavily depend on the volume of data that is managed and processed. For larger data sets having more memory will prove beneficial. Minimally your system should have 2 Dual processors 1.73Ghz with 1Gb of memory available for BurstekReporter. This will work for datasets up to 5Gb of data. For larger datasets the available memory should be increased.

Database server - MySQL
MySQL uses port 3306 by default and the server that MySQL is installed
on needs that port to be opened for incoming requests. For the server
on which Apache Tomcat is installed, the same port needs to be opened
for outgoing requests. By default MySQL and Tomcat are installed on
the same server and the incoming and outgoing requests should be unblocked.
Alternatively, during installation, you can set this port number to
any port number you desire in case TCP port 3306 is already in use or
cannot be unblocked. If you set the port number for MySQL to an alternative
port number, this setting will be applied to both the server and the
client portion of the software.
Web Interface - Tomcat
The user interface for BurstekReporter is a pure web interface; we are
actually using Apache Tomcat as our web server. By default Tomcat listens
to port 8080. Similar to MySQL this port number can be altered. You
can do this during installation by selecting the custom configuration
option. You can either set the port to port 80 (default HTTP port) or
any other port to avoid conflicts. Based on what port number you select
during installation the server and the BurstekReporter shortcuts will
be configured to use that port number. Tomcat will need to have a port
number configured for BurstekReporter to work.
Active Directory
In BurstekReporter you can configure the Active Directory integration.
During this configuration, which is part of the system settings, you
will define the server, username, password, and port number for integration
with Active Directory. BurstekReporter does not require this port to
be available for general use but will need the port number to be opened
for outgoing requests in order for the Active Directory integration
to work. The default port number for Active Directory is port 389.
SMTP (outgoing
mail)
SMTP will only work if the port number required for SMTP communication
has been opened for outgoing requests. This port number will depend
on the SMTP configuration of your mail server. This setting is also
defined in the system settings after the product has been installed.
Can I use my existing
MySQL database?
Yes. If you have already set up a MySQL database you can connect to
that database either locally or remotely and have BurstekReporter use
that. During the install you will have to opt for a custom install and
specify that you want to connect to an existing instance of MySQL. This
connection is done by specifying a machine name/IP address, a port number,
and a user account on that MySQL instance. Make sure that the user account
has the authority to create databases on the server.
Can I install BurstekReporter
on an existing Tomcat installation?
Yes. If you already have an instance of Tomcat running you can deploy
BurstekReporter to that instance of Tomcat. This instance will have
to be Tomcat 6.0 or later.
Does BurstekReporter
require its own Java Runtime installation?
No. You can install BurstekReporter using a Java Runtime that you have
already installed on your system, provided it is a 6.0 or later version
of either the full JDK or just the runtime (JRE).
What if the times
shown on my reports are incorrect?
BurstekReporter allows you to combine multiple log sources into a single
report. When your devices are distributed across the globe, 8 o’clock
on one device in San Francisco wouldn’t necessarily be the same time
as 8 o’clock on another device in New York. This could result in incorrect
grouping of events. To facilitate global networks we have introduced
local time zones per log source. These time zone settings ensure that
the time shown in the report reflects the actual time where the event
occurred. When you define your log sources you should ensure that you
have set the Log Source time zone to the time zone where the log generating
service is actually located. Make sure that the system time on that
source also properly reflects the local time zone.
How can I access BurstekReporter
through the MMC?
BurstekReporter only provides a Web user interface and does not use
or rely on the MMC anymore.
When I browse for a
log source, I can’t browse to other machines?
BurstekReporter allows you to set up network browsing in the administration
section in the system settings page on the network tab. When you specify
a username and password for network access, BurstekReporter will allow
you to browse the network under those user credentials. Make sure to
save your settings before you browse away from this page. You do need
to be an administrator to set this integration up.
What if I can’t
browse Active Directory?
BurstekReporter can be configured to leverage Active Directory for both
user access management and report filtering by AD user or AD group.
You can set up Active Directory integration in the administration section
in the system settings page on the Active Directory tab. You will be
asked for an Active Directory server name/IP address, port number, and
user credentials to log into AD. Once you have set these properties
you can test if the credentials are correct and save the settings. Going
forward the AD integration is enabled for all users. You do need to
be an administrator to set this integration up.
What do I do when I get a 404 error after Burstek Reporter Installation?
After Installation od Burstek Reporter, when launching the Web interface, you receive a 404 page not found error, please STOP and RESTART the BURSTEK REPORTER TOMCAT service.
