Burstek's URL Control List Categories are briefly described below. The color code box beside each category is part of the reporting feature allowing administrators to survey reports very quickly and ascertain if there are problem areas to be addressed.

Ads/Banners - Advertisements and banners that appear on websites.

Anonymizers - Anonymous web browsing through tunneling web sites.

Burstek - Burstek website.

Business Services - Organizations which provide consulting or other business related services.

Chat - Web-based chat groups including forums, message boards and discussion groups on any subject.

Communications - Wireless, broadband, telephone companies and related equipment and service providers.

Computer/Internet - Computer related or Internet related URLs including software companies, Internet Service Providers, computer hardware suppliers and news magazines focused on the computer industry.

Criminal Skills - Sites about bomb-making, lock picking, etc.

Cults & Occult - Any references to cults or the occult (e.g. all cults, satanism).

Dining/Restaurants - Fast food, casual dining, and cafe's.

Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco - Information on the purchase and use of illegal or recreational drugs (e.g. marijuana, cocaine, LSD), paraphernalia, alcoholic products (beer, wine, etc.) and tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, etc.)

Education - A professionally researched YES List of web sites for K-12, colleges, universities especially designed so schools can safeguard students..

Email - On-line or web based mail and forwarding services (Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail).

Entertainment - Includes sites devoted to music, television, movies, etc. Also, magazines or newspapers that focus on the entertainment industry.

Extreme & Violence - Snuff sites and sites which depict or promote violence or gore including rape, bondage, bestiality, body parts, etc.

File Sharing - Web sites providing files, directories, links, software, servers or instructions for peer-to-peer file sharing.

File Types - Includes EXEs, ZIPs, TAR, GZ, AVIs, MPEGs, etc.

Financial - Banks, stock exchanges, brokers and financial and investing news organizations.

Free-Hosted Sites - Websites that contain a variety of content such as blogs, videos, forums, etc. not specific to any other categories.

Gambling - Casinos, gambling, lottery, placing online bets and sport's advisory services.

Games - On-line games, computer games, video games and other related information, including download sites and software companies specializing in games.

General News - Newspapers, magazines and online news organizations.

Government - Federal, state and local government organizations excluding military sites.

Hacking - Hacking, phracking and virus source.

Hate Speech - Sites involving hate speech, terrorists, criminal activity, etc.

Health/Medicine - URLs related to Pharmaceuticals, hospitals, self-help, fitness and vitamins. Also, included are medical information sites.

Humor - Joke sites and other comical pages.

Industry/Business - Manufacturing, construction, energy and agriculture sites not specific to any of the other categories.

Intranet - This category contains no URLs and is provided for individual clients use.

Job Search - Employment sites, job placement services, resumes, recruiting and employment resources.

Legal/Insurance - Attorneys, law enforcement and insurance industry related sites.

Local - Web sites applicable to your local area (i.e. Web pages for local news, weather, etc.) This category contains no URLs.

Malicious Code - Web pages that contain virus' or worms.

Marketing - Advertising or marketing companies and associated service providers, news magazines or newspapers.

Mature - URLs which advertise or sell products intended for adults and do not fall into one of the other categories (i.e. lingerie). Adult humor would also be included.

Military - Official military sites (Airforce, Army, Navy, etc.)

News Groups - Sites that provide access to news groups and uploaded files from news groups.

Non-Profit Organizations - Non-profit organizations not included in one of the other categories.

Personals/Dating - Personal ads, single groups, dating services, dating advice and mail order brides.

Political - Political organizations and discussion groups.

Popups - Websites that open multiple browser windows.

Real Estate - Realtor companies, apartments and other rental properties not associated with travel. Lending institutions exclusive to real estate are also included.

Religion - Sites covering all religions and will include churches, discussion groups and religious literature.

Search - Search engines, search directories, portals: Yahoo!, Alta Vista, Google, etc. Research sites are also included.

Shopping - On-line merchandise sales, price comparisons and may include brick and mortar companies.

Social Networking - Includes sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Bebo.

Sports - Topics related to sports (e.g. sports scores, sports debates sports merchandise).

Spyware/Adware - Includes, Dialers, Hijackers (hijacks the browser and redirects to another URL, changes Favorites) and spybots (collects data on your browsing activity, this information may be distributed to other vendors).

Streaming Media - On-line radio, music, web cams, TV, etc.

Transportation/Shipping - Sites specific to shipping of packages, equipment, etc. (i.e. railroads, trucking companies, etc.)

Travel - Sites related to the travel industry including hotels, cruise ships, airlines, travel reservations, etc.

Useful - URLs containing useful (i.e. hobbies) information which does not fall into one of the other categories.

Vehicles - Automobile, motorcycle and boat manufacturers, dealers, parts suppliers and magazines devoted to this industry.

Weapons - Sites advertising or selling guns, ammunition and other weapons. NOTE: Gun rights and gun legislation discussions are not included in this category.

Weather - Sites dealing with weather and forecasts.

XXX-Sexual Content - Sexually explicit pictures, adult video sales, sex toys, prostitution, sex discussions, nudity and other sexually oriented sites. Non-pornographic but sex-related sites are not included.
